Today is departure day.
I’m heading to the US for React Conf.
I successfully merged a PR and deployed yesterday, so my head feels light — but my heart feels heavy, wondering if something might go wrong.
I rarely take time off unless there’s a big event, so this is my first PTO of the year. I tend to have serious FOMO, so I’m worried about missing something at work.
But I suppose being able to step away from work and recharge is also part of being an effective developer…
Maybe it’s because good things are waiting for me in the States, but as if on cue, my knee decided to act up, so I had to visit the hospital this morning.
Fortunately, it wasn’t anything serious — apparently some inflammation near the patella, probably from going hard on burpees last week. Thanks to that (?), every step I take now reminds me to look forward to the good fortune ahead.
I brought along an 8mm film camera to capture some short clips during the trip, and I’m hoping the film survived the latest CT scanner at Terminal 2.

At the gate in Terminal 2
By next week, I’ll be wandering around React Conf…
It feels surreal to think I’ll see in person the people I’ve only known from React PRs.
I don’t mean to put them on a pedestal, but exchanging a few words with Dan Abramov, or shaking hands with Kent C. Dodds — it’s going to be a pretty amazing experience.
Since I arrived at the airport early, I figured I’d jot this down on my blog. Here’s hoping for a safe arrival in San Jose.
